Home Care Instructions

After Fluoride Varnish Application

It is recommended that fluoride varnish remains on the teeth for a minimum of 4 hours. During that time, please eat only soft food and drink only cold liquids. Eating hard foods should be avoided due to compromising the varnish and its benefits. After 4 hours have passed, do a thorough brushing and flossing.

After Tooth Extraction

  • Bleeding:
    • Some bleeding is normal after any extraction. Bite on a gauze pad for 15 minutes. If bleeding has not subsided, use a fresh pad for an additional fifteen minutes. Repeat if necessary.
  • Pain
    • Some discomfort may be experienced following oral surgical procedures. For mild to average pain, use any non-aspirin type of medication. Repeat as necessary.
  • Mouth Wash
    • Do not rinse mouth. Tomorrow, use salt solution (one teaspoon of salt dissolved in a glass of warm water) every three hours to cleanse the affected area.
  • Swelling
    • Some swelling may be noticed. Do not be alarmed by this normal reaction. Apply ice bag for a ten-minute interval. Remove for ten minutes. Repeat until the swelling is relieved.
  • Eating
    • Soft food is desirable. Avoid very hot, cold or spicy liquids. Avoid getting particles of food into empty space. Avoid actions such as smoking or using a straw.

Remember to call promptly in case of severe pain, excessive bleeding, or any unusual development.

After Composite or Tooth-Colored Fillings

When an anesthetic has been used, you may experience numbness in both your lips and tongue several hours after you leave your appointment. Try to avoid chewing and hot beverages until your numbness subsides. It’s normal to experience some hot and cold pressure sensitivity after your procedure. You can take Motrin or Tylenol every 3 to 4 hours as needed for pain. If pressure, sensitivity, or bite problems persist, please don’t hesitate to call our office at 708-258-6281 so we can help.

Fluoride Tray Instructions:

  1. Use trays at least once a day before bed, preferably once in the morning as well.
  2. Brush and floss before using trays.
  3. Place a small ribbon of fluoride gel in each tray.
  4. Place tray over teeth.
  5. Leave the tray in place for 5 minutes.
  6. Don’t eat or drink while trays are in the mouth.
  7. After 5 minutes, remove the tray, spit out excess saliva, but DO NOT rinse, eat, or drink for at least 30 minutes. At night, go to bed without rinsing, eating, or drinking after removing trays.
  8. Rinse off trays with water and store in case.

After Implant Placement Mouth Care:

  • Some minor bleeding is expected after implant surgery. It will usually subside quickly, and stop within an hour or two after surgery. A little oozing is normal and may persist for several hours.
  • Take your antibiotic as prescribed to completion.
  • Dab area with a Q-tip soaked in Peridex 3-4 times a day.
  • If you are wearing a flipper, it is simply cosmetic and not meant for chewing. Please remove during meals.
  • Take a couple ibuprofen if you experience any soreness.
  • A healing cap may have been placed on your implant today. This is the metal button that may be visible. Avoid touching/playing with this area so you do not delay the healing process. Do not brush or floss this area for the next couple days. If this cap becomes loose, call the office as soon as possible.
  • Return to the office in about a week so Dr. March can check the area.
  • After the implant integrates with the bone (about 3 months), the final crown will be placed on the implant.

After CEREC Crown Placement:

Congratulations! Your new CEREC restoration is the most up to date and longest lasting restoration in dentistry today. It will provide many years of service with proper care.

What to Expect:

  • Your bite should feel even, and it should not hurt to chew. We do our best to make sure your bite is perfect, but it is difficult to know if your bite is even until the anesthesia completely subsides. If you feel the new restoration is high, call the office right away. This will not heal on its own, and the tooth will become increasingly sensitive. A quick adjustment will correct this easily.
  • Soreness around the gum tissue and the site of anesthetic placement is common and will subside within a few days.
  • Cold sensitivity may persist for several days or even weeks. This will subside as the tooth “heals” internally. Please call the office if you have extreme hot or cold sensitivity.
  • Thorough brushing and flossing along with a diet low in sugar are essential for excellent dental health. Regular hygiene visits and examinations will help you keep your teeth in their optimum state of health.
